Marnus Labuschagne Dropped from Australia's One-Day International Squad to Face Team India

Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the three-match ODI series against India, with in-form Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw earning a surprise selection.

Performance Issues Result in Omission

The right-hander was left out from the ODI team following scoring just one run in both of his innings during the top-end series against South Africa in August. Labuschagne has a top score of 47 in his last 10 ODI innings.

The batsman has played 68 ODIs and scored 1,871 ODI runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now work towards a return to the Test side in time for the Ashes starting in Perth on November 21.

Surprise Inclusion and Other Squad Changes

There have been indications of a improvement in form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw also hit a hundred for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

Renshaw could to make his ODI debut in the forthcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.

The left-hander has played 14 Test matches with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also seeking a Test return as Australia seek a answer to their batting top-order problems.

Bowling Returns and Injury News

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after taking a break since starring for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.

BBL performer Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after being concussed in the build-up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.

Skipper Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he hopes to heal from a back injury by the time to captain Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.

Squad Selection Approach and Fixtures

Australia have selected a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-game T20 series due to a wrist injury sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 teams after scoring a hundred in the final game against New Zealand to secure a series clean sweep last week.

“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be player management through the back end of the series as players get ready for the summer through Sheffield Shield cricket,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test matches ahead.”

Australia’s three-game ODI series against India begins on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20 internationals from October 29.
