The Tooth Fairy Story Film Analysis: Cartoon Adventure with a Sprinkling of Kid-Appropriate Tween Romance

Throughout this cartoon journey for preteens, the world of fairies focuses on gathering baby teeth of slumbering children and leaving treasure under their pillows. Board-riding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about spending his future to gathering baby teeth—a feeling that’s completely understandable. He is just slightly more curious about the financial workings behind it all: the fairies deliver the teeth to mysterious goblins, who supply gold in exchange. But Van’s curiosity grows when he catches sight of a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be not at all the ugly creature he expected.

An Unlikely Connection and Common Enemy

Everything is prepared for an adventure with a gentle touch of teen romance (though it’s very much suitable for children). The goblin and fairy groups are estranged from one another, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to bring people as one. The two species as seen here are remarkably alike, yet both maintain prejudiced beliefs about the other. The fairies are supposed to be self-centered types, given to stealing whatever they fancy, while the goblins are allegedly dim-witted, foul-smelling, and primitive, but are in fact intelligent and technologically advanced.

Of course, this scenario needs a common enemy to unite against, and this is duly provided in the form of some nasty spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush about their intentions: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they serve as fairly bloodthirsty, if not particularly skilled, villains.

Target Audience and Final Thoughts

There aren’t very many animated films aimed at the kind of audience that is starting to experience early romances, but are not mature enough for the content teenagers are watching instead of Twilight. Should your youngster falls into this age group, it probably won’t to become their new favorite movie, but it’s a decent choice.

The Tooth Fairy Story releases in Scottish cinemas starting October 10 and across the United Kingdom beginning October 24.
